Ceilings (Inspiration)

I am still working in the guest bedroom (we’ve started making the bed…yay!) but my mind is already on the kitchen.
I’ve been thinking about this room since we moved in a year and 3 months ago but I’m no closer to a plan than I was the day we moved in. This room is small, really small, so changing the layout is not gonna happen.
I do however want to make some big changes and one of them is the ceiling. There isn’t a whole lot of area to work with up there but I’ve found a few ideas to change things up.
An easy ceiling treatment would be to paint it something other than traditional white.
How about some gingham wallpaper on the ceiling? Love the color but it would be too much in my small kitchen.
Tried and true white wood planks. Love this look but is it overdone?
Love the planks with the painted wood beams (although my kitchen is too small for this treatment). Can we just take a moment to admire the dreamy turquoise island…
I know this isn’t a kitchen but trying to find a stenciled ceiling in a kitchen was tough and this one that Not Just a Housewife did is so pretty.
Stained wood planks are another great option.
While writing this post and looking at oodles of kitchen ceilings, I think I know what I’m going to do…but you know that could change…several times.
So what do you think about decorating a kitchen ceiling or do you think it should be white? Which ceiling treatment do you like best?
For a small kitchen, the most bang for your buck is the different paint color…I fell in love with the blue ceiling you showed first, and I think the trick with a small footprint is to do what they did and have the upper part of the walls the same color. It allows the eye to continue up, giving the impression that the ceiling is taller than it is, opening up the space. I’m in the middle of a problem kitchen as well, so looking over your stuff for inspiration! The biggest problem is ceiling tiles…the texture makes the ceiling appear lower than it is. Same problem in the living room zone but it is heavily textured instead…same effect. I am desperately trying to avoid “ripping out”…”covering up” is way more appealing right now.
I agree, covering is very appealing. That’s what we ended up doing with our ceiling and it was one of the best decisions we made in our kitchen remodel. Our kitchen was very small and I was worried about closing the space in if we did wallpaper, like in some of the inspiration pics, or a darker paint color. I know it’s a tough decision. The gingham ceiling would drive me batty. It’s just too much going on. The stenciled ceiling is less distracting but I can’t imagine doing all that work and it would be hard on the back and neck. Sure is pretty though.
I don’t think a wood planked ceiling will ever be overdone or out of style. It’s a classic in my book whether it’s painted or stained. In our last house we gutted the entire combined living and dining room (11 1/2 feet by 30 feet). We ripped out the hideous drop ceiling and then removed all the plaster and lath (never again!!!). We put up pine tongue and groove that I stained eEnglish Oak. It was labour intensive but so worth it. I was my favourite part of all the reno’s we did on that house and we got lots of compliments. Gosh I miss that ceiling. lol
I’m actually thinking of doing it again in our current kitchen as the “glittered” popcorn is cracking and coming loose. I’d paint it white this time around though as our ceilings are much lower.
Wow Shirlee what a huge job tearing out the ceiling and putting a new one in. I bet it was absolutely gorgeous and I can understand why you miss it. I feel the same way about a couple houses we did a ton of stuff to. I bet it would look great in your kitchen with all of your beautifully painted cabinets. 🙂

I too, have or had a galley kitchen and we bumped out the wall by just 2 feet and it made a big difference! I know you don’t want to do a major remodel, but it’s a thought. I would not want the gingham ceiling, too closed in feeling. I like the planking, but again would it be too much. How bout some pics of your current kitchen to see what you have to work with?

With a small kitchen you have to be really careful what you do with certain areas, like the ceiling. I think realistically there’s only a few things I could do to make a change and not have it feel closed in. My husband would never do an addition (too cheap ;)). I’ve tried but he isn’t budging. If we stay in this house awhile I’ll have to change his mind.
So what are you doing with the bathtub? Did you tell me and I forgot?

I think it depends on the size and configuration of the kitchen; ie, an 8×12 galley kitchen with an 8′ ceiling isn’t going to accommodate plank and beams without making it feel much smaller than it already is. Maybe you would share with us your current kitchen and so we could give you some realistic thoughts/suggestions? I love living vicariously through other folk’s kitchen updates/reno’s and am looking forward to seeing what you come up with!
You are right about the plank and beams…just too much for my small space. It is a great look for a bigger kitchen though.
Once I’ve definitely decided on a ceiling treatment I’ll post some pics of mine. I just wanted to share some ceilings that caught my eye. 🙂
