Learning to live with less

Happy Monday! Hope you had a great weekend.

First, I want to give you a little backstory about myself: My husband and I were renting for a year before we started to look for a house to buy. Because we had a two year lease, and we would have to break it, we took our time. We needed to try to find a house and the landlord had to find a new renter at the same time, which was not an easy feat. We found a renter really quickly, but the market had slowed and there was not much inventory available. Rather than just picking a house to meet our timetable, we decided to move into a hotel so that we didn’t have to worry about a lease anymore (we did get all of our deposit back from the landlord), and we could find the house that we really wanted. It took us two months to find and move into our new house. Two months of living in a hotel room, that was less than 500 square feet, with my husband, our dog and at least a dozen boxes in various corners of our room.  We had a small kitchen and a small living room area and a separate bedroom, but it was tight, really tight. After we put almost all of our stuff in storage, we ended up only bringing our food, our clothing, and a few pots and pans. That’s it, no other possessions, except for one family photo (talk about learning to live with less 😉 ).

This is our car all packed up and ready to go to our new house. Oh Happy Day!!

Being in a hotel for that long was tough, but once we had moved all of our stuff into our new house, I felt so overwhelmed. You don’t really realize how much stuff you accumulate and how much you really don’t need, until you live in a tiny, little hotel room for two months with nothing but your clothes and a few pots and pans.

We have been in the house for about a month now and I have no desire to get any decorations out yet. I have set up my furniture where I want it, gotten my lamps out, and put my dishes in my cabinets, but I am not ready to decorate…at all. I feel the need to keep things simple right now. I don’t even have the desire to go out and buy decorations, something that I always look forward to. I’m sure that will change, but for right now, I am going to go with the flow and keep my decorations in the boxes. I am still checking out Pinterest and other websites and blogs, and getting lots of ideas, for when I’m ready to unpack. You can follow me on Pinterest, here, and see what I’m liking right now.

I want to paint some rooms first anyway, so maybe that will kickstart my need to decorate and to get all of my “stuff” out. The bathroom is first…the slate tile is everywhere nightmare. I will let you know how that goes. 🙂

Hope you have a great week.
