So, after our closing and our momentary panic at all of the work that needs to be done, we completed our very first project, which was to change the locks on both the front and back doors. Something really simple but also really necessary. We just went to Lowe’s and picked out a deadbolt for the front door, there was already a door knob on the door that was in good shape, and it had no lock, and a door knob and deadbolt set for the back door. The nice people at Lowe’s rekeyed all three locks so that we only had to use one key for all three for a $5 charge, it gets mighty crowded on your key ring if you have a separate key for every single lock in your house. We ended up buying some pretty good locks, not the most expensive, but not the least expensive either. Our cost was $90 for 2 deadbolts, 1 door knob and 2 extra keys. It only took about 20 minutes to do both doors, and that was after my husband put the first deadbolt in upside down and had to take it apart to redo it. A quick and easy project that will give you peace of mind.
Anyone else do this? Any other tips to help make you feel safer in a new house?
