Selling The Cottage and Our Next Chapter

I’ve mentioned this on Facebook, Instagram and in my newsletters but it’s time to share all of the details about what we’ve been up to and where we’re going.

So, in case you haven’t heard we sold our little stone cottage and will be moving to a new house about 30 miles away in the beginning of January.

I know…we have a lot going on but I promise I haven’t been keeping this a secret for long.

It actually came about really quickly right around Thanksgiving. We had been talking about moving on and off this past year but that’s really all it was …just talk.

Why move when you did so much work on your house?

That’s the question we keep getting when we tell people we’re moving.

Yes, we did a lot of work on the house but our life is moving in a different direction right now. And for us to be able to follow that path we have to move.

So what’s happening?

The biggest reason for this move is the new cargo trailer that we ordered.

If you remember when we built Minnie, our cargo trailer conversion, it was with the idea that we would some day go bigger.

Last February we decided it was time so we started planning the next “soon to be named” trailer, which led us to ordering a new 28′ cargo trailer.

Twenty eight feet is pretty big and we knew going in that it would be really tough to park the new trailer and Minnie in our driveway.

We went round and round and tried to figure out a way that we would be able to park both trailers but we just weren’t sure if it would work.

So the decision was made to try to look for a house with a nice piece of property so we could easily park both RVs.

If it happened, great, but if not we would stay in the cottage and come up with a new plan.

The second biggest reason?

In a word, retirement.

The reason we’re building a bigger RV is so we can travel/live in it when we retire someday. It’s always been our dream.

We have several years before we can do that but our build will take a couple of years so now is the time to get to work on it.

Taking a new path

To put our new plan in to action we casually looked for a house on and off during the year but nothing ever seemed right.

That is until we saw the perfect house with a great piece of property.

Ok, it’s not the perfect house, and certainly not my dream home, but the property was the most important thing for us and this house has that.

Once we found the house things moved pretty quickly.

The housing market is crazy right now so we had to make a quick decision to put an offer on the new house when we hadn’t even put ours on the market.

Scary stuff.

There were 4 other offers but after a couple of tense days ours was accepted.

With our offer accepted we had to quickly put ours on the market and sell it so we could close around the same time.

I finished decorating the cottage for Christmas, we took some photos and listed our house the Monday before Thanksgiving.

We gave it a few days to allow people to come through and, in the end, we got and accepted an offer and started the process of packing up to move.

What’s the new house like?

It’s a red brick 1965 ranch that had some remodeling done in the 80’s.

It has 3 bedrooms and 2 small baths and a lot of fixes to do.

It doesn’t have the 1946 charm that our stone cottage has but we will have 1 acre of land and be surrounded by beautiful farmland with cows and horses.

Of course I already have a ton of ideas and a long to-do list but that will have to wait until we close on January 5.

For now we’re doing all of those fun things you have to do when you buy and sell, like getting inspections, signing 1001 papers and packing your life up.

It’ll be a different kind of Christmas and New Year’s for us but after the tough year we had, we’re hoping that 2022 will be our year. A good year!

Oh, and the new trailer? We just found out that it will be ready to pick up a couple of weeks after we move into the new house.

Yes, we are going to be very, very busy!

More to come!
