One of my favorite things to do when fall comes around is to decorate our front porch. It’s not an overly large space, but it is covered and cozy and the perfect spot to enjoy the fall weather. Instead of just giving you a tour of our favorite place to hang out when the weather turns cool, I thought I’d share my 5 tips for creating a welcoming fall porch.

Add fall color

I usually keep my fall color pallet pretty simple by picking one color and spreading it arounds to a couple of different spots on the porch. This year I chose yellow with a small touch of burgundy. Of course I kept my ferns, that I got in the spring, because they are still full and pretty.

 Dress you front door

Nothing says welcome like a pretty fall wreath on the front door. You could always make one and personalize it to your taste, but it doesn’t have to be homemade, or complicated. I made our wreath this year, here, but there have been more than a few times I’ve used a basket and just added branches of leaves from the trees in my yard. It’s quick, easy and cheap, and adds a bit of fall color to the front door.

Not feeling crafty? There’s plenty of places to pick one up. Not everything needs to be handmade.

Create a cozy spot to sit

Our porch isn’t a large space but we are able to accommodate seating for two. I like to bring a couple of pillows out from inside and a throw for those chilly fall nights. Even adding fresh flowers or a vase with branches from the yard will add to the cozy feeling. It’s our favorite spot to hang out or talk with neighbors when the weather turns cool.

It’s ok to use faux candlelight and pumpkins

I’m all about using the real deal to decorate but sometimes it just makes sense to use faux. For instance, I love to see candles flickering at night on our front porch. When we’re outside enjoying the space I light real candles but when we’re not, faux does the trick. You get the same effect without the worry that the house will burn down. I feel the same way about using faux pumpkins. Fall stretches through several weeks and it’s still warm in North Carolina. There’s no way real pumpkins are going to hold up so I pull out the faux. I usually buy a big pumpkin right before Halloween, but that’s it.

Keep it simple

Creating a welcoming fall porch doesn’t have to be complicated or expensive. With the exception of the 3 mums and 3 sunflowers, everything I used to decorate the porch this year I already had.

I’m so ready to enjoy our little fall front porch. The mosquitos eat me alive as soon as I walk out the door so I haven’t been able to enjoy the porch all summer long. I have a feeling that we’ll make up for it during the next several weeks. ūüėČ

Hello and welcome! It’s a great day to stop in to Chatfield Court because today is the first day of our fall tour, the Welcome Fall Home Tour. Over the next 4 days, 16 talented bloggers will open up their homes and share ideas and inspiration on how they welcome fall into their own homes. Make sure you read to the end of the post to find the links for today’s participants.

There’s so much to see today, so grab a cup of coffee and let’s get this tour started with our little cottage all dressed for fall. Enjoy!

We just finished phase one of a redo in the sunroom so I had fun adding a few simple fall touches in the newly reconfigured space. I usually decorate with traditional fall colors, adding in a little orange, but decided to try something different this season.

The living room also had a little redo this year (here and here) so it’s like I’m decorating a new space. It’s amazing what a new paint color and simple curtains can do for a space.

I actually kept it really simple and used most of the same pillow covers that were out all summer. I just added a pop of gold, a cozy throw and some fall flowers and called it done. Super simple.

As usual, I added a lot of natural elements. Apples, fresh flowers and even branches from the yard help to add that fall vibe to the cottage. Decorating your home for fall doesn’t always have to be about pumpkins.

Just like the sunroom and living room, the kitchen and dining are also underwent a makeover since last fall. I’m still loving the black casement windows that I tackled this year. It was a time consuming project but the results are better than I could have imagined.

The kitchen/dining area has become my favorite space to decorate. I love to change things around. The hubs doesn’t love it but it makes me happy.

I always switch the bedding when the seasons change but I don’t really worry about adding fall touches. This year, though, I decided to add a bit here and there. I recently shared the master bedroom and 5 tips to create a cozy fall bedroom with crisp white sheets, fresh fall flowers and lots of texture with throws, blankets and a knitted stool. We can’t do a whole lot in here, it’s just so small, but it’s just enough to give it that cozy, fall vibe.

I love how the cottage feels all decorated for fall. In the short time we’ve been here it’s become my favorite season to decorate.

Thanks so much for stopping by and touring our little cottage.

The next stop on the Welcome Fall Home Tour is Laura, from Duke Manor Farm. Stop over to check out all of her fabulous fall inspiration. After Laura you can head to Cristina’a, Remodelando la Casa,  beautiful outdoor patio and finish up at Jessica’s, Honey n Hydrangea, beautiful fall florals.

If you’ve been hanging around here for a while, then you know that every season I whip up an easy DIY wreath for our front door. I don’t want to disappoint, so we’re continuing the tradition with a simple fall front door wreath. I also made a video so make sure you check it out at the end of the post, along with the winner of the velvet pumpkin trio.

A simple DIY fall front door wreath made with an embroidery hoop and faux flowers.

I’ve had a love affair with my hanging basket for the past several seasons (you can see some of my creations here and here). This time I thought I’d ditch the basket and really change it up with something that is very simple in design.

Not only is the design simple but it was also very easy to make, with just a few supplies. Perfect for me because I get distracted easily if I’m doing anything complicated.

So let’s get right to the supply list and how-to.

Supplies to create a simple fall front door wreath

  • embroidery hoop (I used a 14″)
  • wood stain (I used dark walnut)
  • foam brush
  • faux sunflowers (or any fall flower)
  • wheat bunch (I used blackbeard wheat)
  • floral wire
  • wire cutters
  • feathers (optional – I chose not to use them in the tutorial)

Create a simple DIY fall front door wreath with an embroidery hoop, wheat and faux flowers.

To start my wreath, I separated the 2 pieces of embroidery hoop. I was going to use the inner hoop but the sticker left a residue and I couldn’t remove it.

Next, I stained the hoop. I wanted to warm up the wood so I chose my favorite color, dark walnut.

After the stain dried, I started assembling my wreath.

Using an embroidery hoop to create a simple DIY fall front door wreath.

The wheat stems were pretty long so I used my floral clippers to cut some of the length. I didn’t count how much was in each bunch, I just eyeballed it. Remember, we’re keeping it simple.

I split the wheat in half so both ends of the wheat had “flowers”.

Next I took two pieces of the floral wire and tied the wheat together.

After I tied the wheat together, I took 2 more pieces of wire and attached it to the hoop.

Are you still with me?

Now it was time to add the sunflowers. First, I cut each one down so that the stems were short. Then I wrapped a long piece of floral wire around the stem.

After I wired all 3 flowers, I attached them on top of the wheat and around the hoop.

I go into most projects with an idea of what I want to do, but I’m never really sure how it’s going to look until I’m done. This one came out a bit different but I liked the asymmetrical look so I decided to hang it that way.

Not an easy thing to do. Well, once we figured it out it was easy to hang but it took us a few tries to get it right.

Since I couldn’t use a traditional wreath hanger, I went with my old standby…jute twine. 2 pieces to get this simple fall front door wreath to hang just so.

I didn’t use the feathers in my tutorial but just stuck them in by the sunflowers to see how they looked. I actually liked it better without.

Not my usual front door decor, but it’s a nice change.

I’ve decorated the front porch for fall and I can’t wait to share it with you. It has turned out to be my favorite space in the cottage to decorate for fall.

How’s your fall decorating coming along?
